Sample Personal Statement for Dermatology Residency

“High school was the first time I became interested in dermatology and it’s probably safe to say half the teenagers in the country have at least a passing interest in it. Embarrassment over a “pimple” has kept more than one teenager at home until it cleared. My best friend from first grade through high school developed a severe case of acne overnight that nothing seemed to alleviate. Acne is often dismissed as a teen problem that will pass. My friends did not and clearly wouldn’t. To see how it affected her was painful and even the worst of the bullies couldn’t find it within themselves to harass her after a couple of years. I would have given anything then to rid her of her affliction. After graduation we lost touch. However I was reminded of her suffering during my dermatology clinical rotation in medical school when a patient with severe acne was treated. I was well aware how the quality of life of those afflicted could suffer. My interest in dermatology as a career was sparked by the reminder but soon grew to encompass a wide variety of skin disorders. I derive a great deal of satisfaction when a patient responds quickly to treatment and I am excited to learn more. The amount of things that can adversely affect the skin was truly eye opening. The gratitude of a patient when you are able to remedy something they expected to be burdened with for life is well worth any effort on my part.

I feel my basic skills will serve well as a foundation to build on. After completing the dermatology residency I would like to work in a hospital clinic while teaching others what I have learned. I am confident that I will be able to meet the challenge of successfully completing your residency program should I be accepted.”

Dermatology Residency Application Document Requirements

There are many different documents required when applying for medical residency programs. Collecting the necessary documents and ensuring everything is in order and gets where it is supposed to be is your responsibility even though some of these will be submitted by others. Documents necessary for residency application include:

  • Curriculum Vitae: Your CV is not required but will be useful when completing the online ERAS residency application form since it contains much of the information required.
  • Medical school transcripts
  • COMLEX/USMLE transcripts-test scores
  • Letters of Recommendation: Most dermatology residency programs will require three letters of recommendation. Letter authors should upload the letter they wrote to the ERAS system. Track letters to see if they have been received and follow up with writers if they have not.
  • The Medical Student Performance Evaluation: Formerly known as the Deans Letter, the MSPE details your academic history and performance and includes an assessment of your professional attributes.
  • Dermatology Personal Statement: Address why you chose dermatology as your specialty, your suitability to the program and some of your future career goals related to the field.

Dermatology Residency Application Process

Residency application to dermatology programs has a process that must be followed. There are several stages involved. The basic stages of the process are:

  • Register with the AAMC’s Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
  • Submit ERAS residency application materials on the MyERAS website. Some documents will be submitted by others but it is your responsibility to follow up and make sure that they have been received by ERAS.
  • Interview Process: After residency programs receive applications they will begin scheduling interviews with those students they are interested in. Interviews allow selection boards to assess applicants’ suitability for the dermatology program and at the same time allow students to determine if the program fits their needs.
  • Register for a Match program and submit a match list: The different match programs are the NRMP, AOA, San Francisco, AUA, and Military match programs. Check with individual residency programs to see which they use. The NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) is the program most medical students’ use. After completing all of your interviews and registering with a match program submit a list of residency programs you are interested in to the appropriate matching service. The list you submit should rank residency programs in order of preference. Residency program directors will submit their rank order list (ROL) of applicants to the appropriate match programs. A computer algorithm matches applicants to the highest program on their list that has ranked the applicant.
  • Wait for match results
