Psychiatry Residency Personal Statement Help

Basic Steps in the Psychiatry Residency Application Process

psychiatry residency personal statementApplying for residency programs in psychiatry follows the same basic process as that used in other programs. The residency application process for psychiatry uses the AAMC’s Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

If you do not know how to apply for residency, here are the steps in the psychiatry residency program application process.

  • Register with ERAS
  • Submit the ERAS residency application for psychiatry: Submit the application documents on the MyERAS website
  • Complete the Interview Process: After reviewing applications program directors will schedule interviews with applicants they are interested in and try to assess how well they fit their program. At the same time you will be assessing the programs to see if they provide what you want.
  • Register for a Match: Register for the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program). Submit a list of programs, ranked in order of preference, to the match program after you’ve registered and completed your interviews. Program directors will also submit their rank order list (ROL) of applicants to the appropriate match programs. A computer algorithm matches applicants to the highest program on their list that has, in turn, ranked the applicant.

Now it’s just a matter of waiting for match results.

Documents to Submit for Application to Psychiatry Residency Programs

There are several important documents that must be included when you submit your application. These are:

  • Curriculum Vitae: Don’t submit your CV with the rest of your application. Just bring it so you can use the information for completing the ERAS application form.
  • Medical school transcripts
  • COMLEX/USMLE transcripts-test scores
  • Letters of Recommendation: Most residency programs require a minimum of three letters of recommendation. ERAS let you store all the letters you want, and you can designate different letters for each program. Letter writers should upload their letters to the ERAS system.
  • The Medical Student Performance Evaluation: The MSPE gives your academic history and performance. Most of it will have been written by your student affairs dean in collaboration with other faculty members.
  • Personal Statement: The residency personal statement is one of the best tools to gain program directors interest. Its main purpose is to secure you an interview with the psychiatry residency program. If you need to customize your personal statement for a specific program or specialty the ERAS system allows you to create multiple personal statements.

Personal Statement Sample for Psychiatry Residency

“What on earth could they have been thinking to do such a thing?” is a phrase my mother uses on a daily basis, usually while watching the news. Although this had nothing to do with my decision to study psychiatry it does a reasonable job of expressing the sentiment that led to my wanting to study psychiatry initially. Quite simply I am fascinated by the human mind and entered medical school knowing I would eventually be applying to a psychiatry residency program. Although I still wish to continue the study of psychiatry my focus has changed. Initially my interest was in psychiatry as it applied to law enforcement. I envisioned myself as a FBI profiler or something along those lines.During my clinical rotations I quickly learned how uninformed I was about mental illness and how widespread it actually is. Millions of people suffer from a wide range of problems including schizophrenia, manic‐depressive illness, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, major depression, and panic disorder. Many receive treatment but many do not. My prior interests amounted to personal curiosity and while my interest remains I feel the plight of millions suffering from mental illness is more important. The field of psychiatry is as fascinating to me as it ever was but I now am more aware of the need for doctors to treat those that need it.

I have much to learn and am looking forward to entering a psychiatry residency program that can provide me with the knowledge required. Although I have not settled on a specific goal after completing a psychiatric residency working in a hospital environment has much more appeal for me than entering a private practice. I believe I am capable of completing your residency program successfully if accepted and realize it will require hard work, which I am looking forward to.”

Great personal statements, excellent editing services and helpful critiques enough for you or you need a bit more convincing?
